Merrill Harper was the son of several generations of black blacksmiths who came to Shelburne with the great
immigration after the American Revolution. Merle's father moved from Sable River in Shelburne County to
North Brooksfield in Upper Queen's County, not far from Upper Lunenburg County. Merle's six brothers were
blacksmiths, like him and he was centered in Truro. As a blacksmith, he had a fascination with horses and
almost everything he made was horse related.
